Shattered Realm
At the advent of time, the goddess Lerenae descended upon the realm. With her great power and pure heart, she brought life unto the black abyss. With her gentle hands she molded the land, so that her children might have a place to roam. Crying tears of joy she filled the world with water, so that they might have something to drink. Breathing a soft sigh she formed the skies, so that they would have air to breathe. Plucking three strands from her silken hair, she formed three great lord’s to watch over and protect her children. To nurture the lands and all within them she bore Ternis, the fearless lord of the forests. So that the waters might be kept safe and free for all, she brought forth Akari, the great beast of the seas. In order to survey the skies so that they might be kept clear she birthed Quethlon, the noble dragon of the mountain. With her three faithful to protect them, she gave birth to her children; every last creature that may walk, swim, or fly. As a final act of love she pricked her finger, her sacred life’s blood taking form into the sacred stones. Exhausted and pleased from her work, she retreated to her realm so that she might slumber. To her faithful she left an edict: “That should her children fall into darkness and despair, she will return to shine her glorious light upon the realm. And before her light the wicked shall perish, and she shall embrace the pure of heart, holding them to her bosom and setting them back on the path to prosperity”
Eight hundred thirty-eight cycles have passed since the goddess began her slumber. After a great age of peace and prosperity, there are ominous clouds lurking over the future. Herrone, the beloved Crown Prince of Varenfel, mysteriously died. Heartbroken and sick with grief, his father, King Tyronus, soon passed away as well. Not even a day had passed the deceased king’s second son, Tyronus II had taken his place on the throne. It was never questioned openly, though many believed the prince’s death to have been no accident. And they all pointed their fingers at one man, King Tyronus II.
Over the next few passings, the new king of Varenfel began to drastically change the kingdom’s role in the world. Whilst most of the nation’s wealth had gone towards peaceful growth and expanding the influence of the Church of Lerenae, it was now directed almost wholly towards the creation of new engines of war. The royal machinist’s began creating ever more powerful tools of death. Airships, the pride and joy of Varenfel for many cycles, began to become militarized, and Varenfel began construction of a massive airforce. As if this was not enough to make the other kingdoms worry, the king somehow managed to gain control of the vicious and warring Archrid race. With them he overran the mountain that was the ancestral home of the dragon kin, as well as the source of the air kyndlar. Mass excavation of the kyndlar soon began, the sacred icons being sold off for profit.
The citizens were enraged by these acts, and many spoke out against the new king. The most vocal of the dissenters was the Church of Lerenae, who condemned the king’s actions full, and even demanded he abdicate the throne. Soon after many church leaders were publicly executed, in a display meant to illustrate what dissent would bring. Soon after his forces spread out, sweeping across the unorganized lands. Political pressure from both Ver’se and Leanarth forced him to recall the troops back to Varenfel, but not after having them make sport of the many tribes.
Cycles passed, and dissent only furthered under Tyronus’ oppressive rule. Rumors of rebellion began circulating in the shadows, and soon became common knowledge. Anyone accused of aiding the rebels was immediately imprisoned. Soon enough the rebel’s, known as the Seven Moons, made their presence clearly known. Simultaneously launching a massive attack all across Varenfel, they attempted to force the king out of power by seizing control of key points throughout the kingdom. However the royal military, aided by near millions of Archrids, pushed the rebels back, slaughtering all they found. During the attack on Mt. Rayna the rebel leader, Kyrian Thrace, was captured. The next day he was publicly beheaded.
Since that day. the rebels have regrouped, slowly becoming more and more of a threat as their guerrilla tactics strain the edges of the empire. The king’s forces are mobilizing to search them out and wipe the last of them away. However this military build up has put the neighboring kingdom of Leanarth on edge, and they too have been preparing their forces. Tensions are on a high, and the slightest thing could set the whole thing ablaze. This will soon be a shattered realm.
